Emergency Migraine Kit [Updated]

Achy Smile's Emergency Migraine Kit

UPDATED October 22, 2018 — I’ve been getting a lot of questions lately about my Emergency Migraine Kit (aka EMK). I figured, let’s talk about it! I remember reading a Facebook post when I was first diagnosed with Hemiplegic Migraine from a fellow migraine advocate, Teri Robert. She talked about a small kit she kept with her that included what she felt important to fight off future attacks. I knew I had to make one of my own.

I talk a lot about my EMK in other posts, but I wanted to dedicate this post specifically to what goes into my purse or backpack every day. I seriously NEVER leave home without it. Some products are just common sense, others are what I consider “lifesavers.” Lifesavers are items I feel are crucial to possibly ending an attack right away -OR- tampering down a symptom that’s getting out of control.

There are also THOUSANDS of different types of bags in various styles on Amazon as well.

What’s In the Bag?

There are a few items I hold most dear when it comes to keeping my EMK stocked. I could go on and on about the products listed below, but I won’t do that to you. I have written a few reviews on some of the items, for your reading pleasure!

I will go into a little detail about my muscle rub; I create my own and it’s AMAZING! The muscle rub I linked to below is available on the market right now that works almost as well. Plus it’s in travel sized packets, perfect for your EMK! I am seriously considering bottling my muscle rub and selling it in my new shop. I’ll keep you posted if I decide to!

Without further ado, here are the items in my EMK above!

  1. TheraSpecs Migraine Glasses  LOVE them! (Read my Review)
  2. Nuun Electrolyte Tablets (Read my latest post about Electrolytes)
  3. Water Bottle is a requirement whenever I leave the house. I never know when I will need to take emergency migraine meds.
  4. Ear Plugs (Read my latest post about Ear Plugs for plane travel)
  5. Eye Mask is best when it has a popped out eye area, like mine. Great at blocking out light!
  6. Hot/Cold Mask (My favorite Hot/Cold Mask for Migraine Relief)
  7. Muscle Rub is really important for some people with migraine. It is for me! I use a lot of BioFreeze when I can get my hands on it.
  8. Essential Oils help me get out of a bind when I’m in an area that is saturated with perfume or potpourri. I just open a little vial of peppermint oil and take a few sniffs for as long as I need to. That usually helps me tremendously.
  9. Snacks get me through the day when meals are far apart. Getting hungry sometimes triggers migraine for me.
  10. Water Cup is handy when you don’t have a water bottle nearby. This cup is collapsible and totally awesome!

Why These Items?

Each item in my kit was carefully selected after trial & error with many products over the last 14 years. These products are what work for me, personally. I highly suggest them, but you may find they aren’t for you. If so, that’s ok! Keep trying new things and finding what works best with your body chemistry. We’re all different and we all have needs tailored to our unique makeup. You are important, so don’t give up finding what is best for you!
