Tell us if you’ve been here before. You are getting ready for a day at work and can’t stop thinking about your migraines. Today is not the day for your head to feel like it’s splitting open – and you’ll do anything to prevent a migraine attack. Desperate, you look around the room a grab a pair of sunglasses to wear outdoors and indoors. Sure, they look silly, but they will block out light and keep you safe from a migraine.

Well, unfortunately, we’re here to burst your bubble. Sure, wearing sunglasses indoors can keep you safe from a migraine (and they sure do look silly,) but migraineurs should NEVER wear sunglasses indoors. Here’s why:

Sunglasses Can Make Your Eyes Go Soft

Well, not physically soft, but stay with us.

Sunglasses are very effective for blocking out light – a good pair of sunglasses can block out up to 90% of visible light. This is reassuring if you want to protect your eyes temporarily, but it’s not a long-term solution.

See, our eyes get comfortable very quickly. When they are in a dark room, they adapt. The transition from a light room to a dark room is fairly painless, although you may not be able to see anything that is in front of you for a few minutes. The transition from a dark room to a light room? Forget about it. Even if you don’t experience light sensitivity, your eyes will not enjoy a sudden transition from dark to light.

Exiting a movie theatre or turning on the lights in a dark room is not a fun experience, and if you have photophobia or migraine, this not-fun-ness is even more extreme.

If you wear sunglasses indoors for a long period of time, you “keep your eyes in the dark” for a longer period of time. Your eyes will quickly adapt and feel more and more comfortable behind lenses that filter out 90% of visible light. They will get more stubborn and more sensitive when they do have to “face the light.”

Unfortunately, this means that if you are wearing sunglasses indoors, you are setting yourself up to experience more migraine and more intense light sensitivity symptoms. Yeah, we see you taking off your sunglasses. Don’t be shy.

Try FL-41 Glasses Instead

So sunglasses aren’t the solution – what is?

Instead of choosing glasses that aim to block out most light, choose glasses that only block out the lightwaves that trigger migraine. FL-41 glasses (also known as “migraine glasses”) have a rose tint that block out blue and UV waves that affect people with photophobia and light sensitivity. You can buy them as indoor glasses, outdoor glasses, or transition lenses to keep your eyes safe as you move in and out throughout the day.

Don’t let sunglasses weaken your eyes over time. Choose migraine glasses that are scientifically proven to reduce migraine symptoms and light sensitivity.
