Aimovig: 70 mg Booster Update

Aimovig Update

It’s been a while since I’ve written an Aimovig update and I just wanted to give you some insight into what’s been going on lately. So many people on Facebook closed groups dedicated to all the anti-CGRP injections who take Aimovig have such varying experiences. Some are super responders, meaning they have a little to no more migraine days. Others are like me, with a 50%+ decrease in migraine days.

Aimovig works amazingly for the first two weeks of the month and I’m still injecting the 140 mg dose. I hoped by now that the medication would be giving me more coverage than it already is. I started injecting Aimovig back in July 2018. Since it’s been over a year, I pretty much know what each month will look like as far as migraine-free days. To try and get additional migraine-free days in the month, my neurologist and I decided to try something different.

In September 2019 (last month), my neurologist handed me two boxes of 70mg Aimovig injections. He instructed me to take them on the first day of week 3. I think of this as a booster shot to the 140 mg I already inject in week 1. I did notice coverage all the way through those last two weeks in the month in September. Excitement doesn’t begin to explain it!

In October 2019 (this month), I took another 70 mg injection in week 3. Last week, after the booster, I did really well. No attacks in week 3. Today, I’m in the middle of week 4, and I’ve had migraine attacks the last three days. For whatever reason, my trigger threshold is lowered right now. I know this because things like grocery shopping have triggered migraine attacks without the head pain. That’s what’s different, though. I don’t have head pain…just everything else. And that everything else is just as disabling as the head pain can be in some cases.

While I consider September a success, I’m on the fence about October. I was only given two boxes to try as a booster, but I don’t feel like two months is enough time to really know if it will be the key to having 80-90% reduction in migraine days. I will be making a call to my Neuro next week to find out if he’s willing to give me a couple more months of samples before he “goes to bat” with the insurance company. He told me if these boosters work, he would do his best to explain why I need an additional 70 mg of Aimovig. We’ll see what happens!
